Business Manager’s Update

Fall 2012

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We all know the formal training the Local 39 Training Department provides is a great value, especially when you see the dividends that this training provides in the form of wage and benefits for our Members.

Most if not all of the membership should now be aware that this year in the Collective Bargaining Arena we are facing many challenges. It is now imperative the members maintain and improve their skills in their respective trades. I understand this. To assist you I have mandated that the Training Fund reduce operating costs and pass this savings on to you, the member. It was not an easy choice. A major position in the Training Department has been eliminated and resources have been trimmed. It is my hope that members take advantage of this change. I am unsure if it can be maintained and may be adjusted up or down in future semesters. What this means to you is that the cost of training for a Member who works for a contributing employer has been dramatically reduced.

As a Member of Local 39 you are part of a great organization who believes in taking care of its own. Training of this nature at such a low cost is a benefit that shouldn’t be ignored. The Local 39 Training Department will no longer offer training to non-members. As a Local 39 Member these training opportunities are now reserved strictly for you.

In order to take advantage of this exclusive benefit, all Local 39 Members will need to show their IUOE Local 39 Membership card. This will ensure that you are indeed a Local Member and entitled to this remarkable benefit.

Jobsite Training request continue to grow. We have already completed Jobsite Training in such area as Confined Space, Electrical Safety, Fire Pump Testing, and Variable Frequency Drives to mention a few.

Another area that continues to grow is our online training. In the coming semester Chiller Plant Operation and Maintenance will provide practical training on plant operations. And as for new seminars, we now offer Fire Extinguisher Training for those of you who want to add another item to your resume.

So, take advantage of this great benefit. It is imperative that you continue to make yourselves a valuable asset to your employer.

Fraternally,
Jerry Kalmar
