Fire Pump Certification
All businesses in California that test or service automatic
fire extinguishing systems in house must obtain
a type “L”license through the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Building owners are granted State Fire Marshal licenses if they
meet certain work experience and/or training requirements and
pass an on-site field inspection of their facility.

The Type “L” License

Building owners are granted State Fire Marshal
licenses if they meet certain work experience and/or
training requirements and pass an on-site field inspection
of their facility.
The Type “L” License:
- Applies to all automatic sprinkler testing up to and including the annual test.
- Applies to all dry and wet standpipe testing up to and including the annual test.
- Applies to all testing and maintenance of the outside privately-owned fire hydrants.
- Allows building owners to run weekly fire pump tests, but only by a certified fire pump operator.
How to Obtain a Fire Pump Certification
All personnel who test and run fire pumps MUST have a fire pump certification.
- The Engineer must fill out an application for a weekly fire pump test certificate.
- The Engineer must take a 30 question written test given by the office of the State Fire Marshal. The examination is based on NFPA 20 and NFPA 25 California Edition
- The building owner must have a Type “L” License
