What is the mission of the Training Department?
The Training Department is committed to providing Local 39 members with quality training that will allow them to be amongst the top professionals in the industry. Through our apprenticeship program and popular classes such as Digital Controls and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, our instructors are able to pass on their extensive knowledge and experience.

Where are your training centers located?
We have two main training centers; one in San Francisco and another in Sacramento. For maps and directions, please see Training Locations.

What are the training centers’ hours?
Our two offices are open from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
What do Stationary Engineers do?
Stationary Engineers operate and maintain equipment in buildings, such as boilers, pumps, fans, compressors, refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems, motors and automated controls. They are responsible for the safe, efficient operation of all systems under their control. Engineers work in hospitals, hotels, food processing and other industrial plants, public and private office buildings, wastewater plants, drinking water plants, and airports.
How do I get to be an engineer?
There are two ways to become an engineer. You can enter our apprenticeship program to acquire the skills needed or, if you already have the skills, you can call Local 39 Dispatch at (415) 861-1178.
How do I join the union?
To join the union, please call Local 39 at (415) 861-1135. They will be able to help you with the membership process.
Do you know of any job openings?

How do I know if my employer is a contributor?
Contact your business agent to find out if your employer is a contributor.
Who can attend classes?
The Training Department offers classes to Local 39 members of contributing employers and non-contributing employers. Non-members are also welcome to attend classes, but pay a higher rate per class.
When are courses offered?
We offer full semester courses in the fall and spring. Seminars occur year-round.
Do you need instructors?
Yes! We are always looking for qualified instructors who wish to share their knowledge with others. Please contact us at (415) 285-3939 if you are interested in teaching a class or seminar.
How do I become an instructor?
Our instructors must have at least 6 years of industry experience or a college-approved teaching credential. If you meet this qualification, please contact Tammie Lewis-Sansano at tlewis-sansano@local39.org. She can be reached by phone at (415) 285-3939.
Do you have a printed catalog of classes?
Yes. Our Fall 2007 Course Catalogs are now available. You can get a copy at your local union hall or training center. Or you can download it here. Adobe Acrobat is required.

What is the apprenticeship program about?
An apprenticeship program is an organized system of on-the-job training supplemented by related technical instruction, in which the apprentice learns by doing, and earns while learning. The apprentice will be indentured by the Joint Labor Mangement Apprenticeship Committee (JAC), which will monitor the apprentice’s progress for the four years of the program. When is the test notice for apprenticeship available?
The application for apprenticeship testing is now closed. The next application will occur in June of 2008. Imformation for testing will be released after April 2008.
What should I study for the apprenticeship test?
The test is a general education exam that evaluates your reading, mathematics, applied mathematics, language and spelling skills. Contact your local public library for general education reference materials. One way to prepare is to review the basic skills required for a High School graduate.
When is the next apprenticeship graduation?
The 45th Annual Apprenticeship Graduation will be in March 2008. For updates, please see Graduation Information.
How do I get a copy of the Apprenticeship Standards?
To receive a copy of the Apprenticeship Standards of the Northern California and Northern Nevada Stationary Engineers, please contact Jim Maple at (415) 285-3939 or via email at jmaple@local39.org. There is a $5.00 printing charge for non-members.
What classes will be offered this coming semester?

Where will the classes be taught?
Classes will be held in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Jose, Concord and Hayward. Location details can be found under Training Locations.
Are the classes you offer college credit courses?
Our High Rise Fire Safety Director class is 1.5 credits through City College.
Will Local 39 refund me for taking a class or seminar at another school?
If a member of a contributing employer takes a full semester, job-related course at a community college or regional occupation center, Local 39 Training Department will reimburse the student up to seventy-five dollars for the registration fee. The student must successfully pass the class and present a transcript and receipt for the reimbursement.
I just finished taking a course. When will I receive my grade?
Our instructors are given time to complete their grades and turn them in so your grades are not ready immediately. After thirty days from the last day of your course, please call the San Francisco Training Center at (415) 285-3939 to receive your grade.
Do you have summer classes?
No, we do not have summer classes at this time. We do offer a variety of seminars during the summer.

If you are interested in attending a seminar that we do not currently offer, please email Tammie Lewis-Sansano at tlewis-sansano@local39.org. In order to conduct the seminar, we need a minimum of 15 students.
